Lincoln may not have seen its first snowfall yet, but that doesn’t mean the city isn’t already gearing up for winter.
For the second year, Lincoln Transportation and Utilities is calling on residents to get creative and name the city’s fleet of snowplows in the “Name That Snowplow†contest.
“To get into the spirit of winter, we invite residents to join in the fun once again by naming more snowplows,†LTU Director Liz Elliott said in a news release.
This winter, eight snowplows are ready to cruise the streets, but first, they need names that will make them as memorable as they are essential.
“Winter in Lincoln is an opportunity for our community to come together and embrace the season,†Elliott said in a news release. “These snowplows are symbols of our dedication to keeping Lincoln safe on city streets.â€
The contest is officially open to the public, and residents can submit their best snowplow names through Nov. 26. Names can be submitted online at . Winning names will be displayed on city snowplows in early 2025.
While creativity is encouraged, there are a few guidelines participants must follow. Submissions must be 17 characters or less, including spaces, to fit on the trucks. Names cannot include profanity, inappropriate language or copyrighted or trademarked terms. Submissions also shouldn’t include your own name.
If two or more people submit the same name, the first person to submit will be credited. Employees and family members of the city of Lincoln are excluded from participating.
Once the entries are in, members of the public can continue to play their part by voting for their favorite snowplow names from a list of 25 finalists. Voting will run online from Dec. 23-Jan. 3. After the voting period, the winners will be announced the week of Jan. 13.
The winners will be notified by phone and email and will also receive a prize, courtesy of LTU, available for local pickup.
Last year’s contest brought in more than 1,700 submissions. The winning names were: Clearopathra, Scoop Dogg, PlowyMcPlowface, Darth Blader, Austin Plowers, Truck Norris, AntiSnowcial and Snow Big Red.
