The Lincoln Police Department released more information Thursday about the investigation that led to the arrest of two Omaha men allegedly involved in a homicide outside a downtown Lincoln bar last month.
At about 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 8, 24-year-old Saiveon Hopkins was killed after reports of a fight outside a bar near 11th and P streets.
Officers found Hopkins and another man with gunshot wounds. Both men were taken to a local hospital. Hopkins died from his injuries at the hospital.
According to Capt. Ben Miller, LPD's investigation, along with the help of the Omaha Police Department, U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, led to the arrest of 30-year-old Gregory Bahati at about 6 a.m. Wednesday in Douglas County.
Wright has been charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony and two counts of second-degree assault.
Bahati has been charged with aiding and abetting first-degree murder, two counts of aiding and abetting second-degree assault, and aiding and abetting using a firearm to commit a felony.
Miller said investigators reviewed video and interviewed dozens of witnesses from the shooting.
The evidence they gathered led police to believe Hopkins, Wright and Bahati were in the area when fights broke out near the Highball Bar on 11th Street but were not involved initially.
Shortly before the shooting occurred, Bahati did have a "minor involvement" in a separate fight, Miller said.
Bahati then looked toward Wright and said, "Shoot him" while pointing at Hopkins, Miller added.
LPD is still investigating why Bahati told Wright to shoot at Hopkins even when they believe Hopkins had no involvement in any fight.
Police believe Wright pulled out a gun and fired at least two rounds before fleeing.
LPD could identify Bahati giving the command to Wright from video footage they obtained.
Additional footage after the shooting showed Wright getting into a black Honda Pilot a few blocks away. Miller said the vehicle was owned by a family member of Bahati.
Omaha police provided footage of Wright leaving his residence in Omaha hours before the shooting wearing the same clothing worn by the shooter.
Investigators determined the Pilot was used to drive from Omaha to Lincoln and was later seen dropping off Wright at his residence after the shooting.
Police served search warrants on Wright's and Bahati's residences. After the searches, officers discovered two handguns and one rifle. The weapons will be tested to see if they had any involvement in the killing, Miller said.
Currently, LPD does not believe there are any other suspects related to Hopkins' shooting.
Judge Timothy Phillips did not set a bond for Wright or Bahati.
The Lancaster County Public Defender's Office was appointed to represent them. The office did not immediately respond for comment.
Both men are being held at the Lancaster County jail.
