Bath & Body Works Pull KKK Candle From Shelves Amid Controversy
Bath & Body Works has pulled its "Snowed In" three-wick candle from shelves following complaints that the snowflake design on its label resembled Ku Klux Klan hoods. The design, intended to evoke a folded snowflake cutout, featured white pointed shapes with cutout holes that some customers online likened to KKK hoods. The company issued an apology, stating, “We are committed to listening to our teams and customers, and committed to fixing any mistakes we make – even those that are unintentionalâ€. Bath & Body Works is removing the candle from stores and reassessing its design process. Reactions online were mixed, with some defending the design as harmless, while others saw the resemblance as unmistakable. One commenter noted, “Being offended is subjective. Just because you aren’t, doesn’t mean others’ feelings are invalidâ€. This isn't the first time the company has faced backlash. In 2022, they were criticized for cultural appropriation after using Kente cloth designs on Black History Month products.
