Runners from across Nebraska and beyond took part in the 11th annual Good Life Halfsy half-marathon Sunday in Lincoln — and set a record in the process.
About 7,100 people took part in Sunday's race, according to Pink Gorilla Events, the race's organizer, topping last year's record of nearly 6,700 runners.
Participants grabbed bananas, water and heat blankets after the race, which started at Seacrest Field and ended on Canopy Street in the Haymarket. Beer, food and music awaited them at an afterparty in the Railyard.
Pasca Cheruiyot of Ames, Iowa, was the first woman to cross the finish line in 1 hour, 15 minutes and 14 seconds. Cheruiyot said she’s had the Good Life Halfsy on her racing list because it’s close to where she lives and because Lincoln is welcoming.
“It feels awesome,†said Cheruiyot. “I usually just (finish) top three, and then whoever comes, you don't know who is there faster.â€
Hannah Hoefler ran Sunday after recovering from a form of encephalitis, which she was diagnosed with about a year ago.
“It's been a long time coming, and it feels good to be able to cross that finish line,†Hoefler said after the race. “Feels pretty good.â€

“I don't want this to be the last thing that I sign up for,†Hoefler said. “There's a lot of races in Lincoln, so I'll be looking into those.â€
For Bradley Neff of Hebron, Sunday's Halfsy was his first half-marathon.
“It's definitely a lot stranger a feeling running a whole 13 miles compared to a Kk, which is like the most I ever ran before this,†said Neff, who plays men's volleyball at Kansas Wesleyan University. “Keeping your legs going was the hardest part for me, not stopping, but I didn't stop.â€
Neff said the Halfsy was “a whole different game†compared to what he's used and was grateful for the experience.
“We’re very blessed to have something like this to participate in,†Neff said.
