There were at least seven homicides in Lincoln in 2023, which was a decrease from 11 in 2022 and in line with the city's yearly average over the past decade.
There also were two deaths at the hands of law enforcement in Lancaster County and three other deaths that haven't yet been classified but are considered "suspicious," according to officials.
Julian Martinez
On Jan. 21, Julian Martinez, 18, was shot and killed by his neighbor, Armon Rejai, 30. Lincoln police responded to the shooting near 19th Street and Euclid Avenue at about 10:15 a.m., police say.Â
Residents in the area called police after the shooting, including Rejai, who told dispatchers he had just "shot someone," according to Assistant Police Chief Brian Jackson.
The dispute between Martinez and Rejai began with issues about animals and escalated from there, Jackson said.Â
Rejai was charged with first-degree murder and is being held at the Lancaster County jail.
Rudy Requejo Jr.
Rudy Requejo Jr., who was 22 months old, died at an Omaha hospital on March 17 after months of child abuse, police investigators said in court documents.
At the hospital, Requejo was unresponsive, and staff found numerous bruises and injuries to his body, police said in an emergency custody affidavit.
Requejo was taken via helicopter to an Omaha hospital in critical condition, where he would later die.
Tackett was charged with child abuse resulting in death and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Cook was charged with child abuse resulting in death. They are both being held at the Lancaster County jail.
Ronald Gonzalez-Rivas and Christopher Karmazin
Ronald Gonzalez-Rivas, 45, and Christopher Karmazin, 42, were run over outside a south Lincoln apartment complex on March 27.
Taylor Bradley, 28, was a resident at the apartment complex where Gonzalez-Rivas and Karmazin worked as maintenance employees. Bradley ran them over outside of the complex's clubhouse. They were both pronounced dead at the scene by first responders.
Bradley was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder, and three counts of use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony. She is being held at the Lancaster County jail.
The public defender assigned to Bradley filed a notice of his intention to raise an insanity defense at trial.
Damien Brave
Damien Brave, 18, of Lincoln was shot during a house party on March 31 in the 1800 block of North 27th Street. Police were called to the residence around 11:30 p.m., officials said.
Brave was pronounced dead at a local hospital on April 1 from multiple gunshot wounds.
Kashuan McCree, who was 17 years old at the time of the shooting, was arrested in Detroit, Michigan, for his alleged involvement in Brave's death.
McCree was charged with first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony. He is being held at the Lancaster County jail.
Mark Kruger

Mark Kruger, 59, of Lincoln, was stabbed to death at a home near 63rd Street and Baldwin Avenue on May 7.
Joseph Kruger, 40, was arrested at the scene. Mark Kruger was his stepfather, but he raised him since birth, and they considered each other blood relatives, Joseph Kruger's sister said.
Police said that the two were at a family gathering and got into a dispute before the stabbing.
Joseph Kruger was charged with first-degree murder and use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony. He is being held at the Lancaster County jail.Â
According to the probable cause affidavit, a witness heard a commotion near the intersection of North 13th and P streets and saw a man punch Baylor in the face and saw him fall down, hitting his head on the sidewalk and making a loud noise.
Angel Rodriguez Alvis, 23, was arrested Nov. 19 and charged with manslaughter and first-degree assault. He is currently being held at the Lancaster County jail.
Other deaths
There were two people killed at the hands of law enforcement in Lancaster County in 2023. Chace Abney, 35, was shot by a Nebraska State Patrol trooper and Lincoln police officer in a parking lot near Northwest 27th and West O streets on May 1.Â
Investigators were conducting surveillance at the Super 8 at 2635 W. O St. when Abney followed them in a Chevrolet Malibu, leading to a confrontation, according to Lancaster County Sheriff Terry Wagner.
Investigators commanded Abney to exit the vehicle, then he allegedly pointed a gun at the officers and fired one round toward them, Wagner said. The officers then shot Abney multiple times.
Abney died from his wounds on May 6. A grand jury will investigate Abney's death, as is the case with any fatal officer-involved shooting.
Officials claimed Santana-Ramirez had a weapon, but haven't said what kind of weapon.Â
More details on the case have not been provided by the Nebraska State Patrol, which is leading the investigation. A grand jury will also investigate Santana-Ramirez's death.
On Nov. 3, Robert Boshart, 62, and JoAnn Boshart, 62, were found with gunshot wounds by deputies with the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office after a welfare check was performed at their rural Lancaster County home.
The only people inside the house were the Bosharts, and the Sheriff's Office confirmed with video footage from the property that no one had come in or out besides them that day.
JoAnn Boshart was pronounced dead at the scene. Robert Boshart died from his wounds on Nov. 6.
Their deaths have not been classified yet.
On Dec. 19, LPD classified the death of a 76-year-old Lincoln man as suspicious. Alaric Harden, 45, was arrested inside a home near 12th and New Hampshire streets where the body was found.
Harden was arrested on suspicion of removing or concealing human remains. He was later charged with an unrelatedÌý²ú³Ü°ù²µ±ô²¹°ù²â.
During his arraignment for the burglary, the Lancaster County Attorney's Office requested a $100,000 percentage bond, citing the fact that he is a suspect in a potential homicide investigation.
