An Omaha woman charged in a Douglas County arrest warrant with intentional cruelty to an animal resulting in death was arrested Friday without incident.
A felony warrant for Kendra Dawkins, 38, was issued Feb. 20. An affidavit filed by a Nebraska Humane Society animal-control officer said Dawkins called the shelter Dec. 8, 2023, to say she believed her dog, a pit bull mix named Diamond, was either sick or dying.
Dawkins told animal-control officers who came to a residence near 45th Street and Crown Point Avenue that she thought the dog may have been poisoned by a former neighbor. She allegedly told officers that she had no funds or time to take the dog to a veterinarian.
The dog was taken to the Nebraska Humane Society, where it was euthanized. A veterinarian at the Nebraska Humane Society performed a necropsy and found no poison in Diamond’s system.

The necropsy report said that multiple infected bite wounds had been found on Diamond’s face and hind legs. It also said the dog had been “suffering from the final stages of starvation†that should have been apparent to the average pet owner.
Dawkins, who was arrested at a residence near 33rd and Boyd Streets, is awaiting her first court appearance while being held in the Douglas County Jail. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison.
