A Lincoln inmate being held at the Reception and Treatment Center died Wednesday at a Lincoln hospital, according to the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.Â
Shawnn Nahkahyen-Clearsand, 56, was sentenced to 40 to 50 years in prison in October 2023 after being found guilty of attempted first-degree sexual assault of a child in Douglas County.

According to court documents, Nahkahyen-Clearsand assaulted an 8-year-old girl. The victim reported the assault to a school counselor, which prompted the Omaha Police Department to investigate the accusation.Â
Initially, Nahkahyen-Clearsand was charged with first-degree sexual assault, third-degree sexual assault and being a habitual criminal.Â
The charges were later amended to attempted first-degree sexual assault of a child. The two other charges were dropped. Nahkahyen-Clearsand pleaded no contest and was found guilty.

A grand jury will conduct an investigation into his death, as is the case whenever somebody dies in custody in Nebraska.
