University police took a suspect into custody Sunday after a witness reported a gunman on campus.
Someone reported a man with a gun to University of Nebraska-Lincoln police about 5:30, saying he pulled out the gun and pointed it at a passerby before going into Cather Hall, UNL police said in their logs.
Police sent out an alert via social media and phone texts, warning people to avoid the area and to protect themselves, UNL police said.
Officers quickly found a UNL student who had a toy gun that looked real, UNL Police Sgt. Jeff Hohlen said.
Authorities referred the student to the Office of Student Judicial Affairs for violating university policy, the sergeant said. He was not cited.
