Target is planning to spend more than $5.5 million to update two of its Lincoln stores.
The retailer filed a $4.45 million building permit last week for work at the Super Target store at 40th Street and Yankee Hill Road. That comes on top of a $1.1 million building permit filed in December for work on the Target at 48th and R streets.
Target spokeswoman Liz Hancock said that work at both stores is part of the company's program to update and modernize more than 1,000 of its locations across the U.S. by the end of next year.
Hancock said in an email that because work hasn't started yet at the two Lincoln stores, she didn't have any specific details to share about what's being done.
In general, she said, store remodels will feature "modernized design elements and bringing more technology and digital experiences to our stores to give guests an experience that’s easy and inspiring."
"No two remodels will be the same," Hancock said. "Across the country, we’ll be choosing elements to create customized concepts to meet the needs of local guests."
The building permit for the Super Target store lists work being done to the guest/service area, order pickup, fitting rooms, offices and grocery. The building permit for the 48th and R Target lists replacement of finishes, signage and lighting as well as reconfiguration of fitting rooms.
In a blog post on Target's website, Joe Perdew, vice president of store design, says in a Q&A about the remodels at stores with two entrances -- which Lincoln's Super Target has -- one will be designed around “ease†and the other around “inspiration.â€
"The 'ease' entrance might have features like drive-up parking spaces, an online order pickup counter, self-checkout lanes and grab-and-go grocery and essentials right there as you walk in — everything the guest needs to get in and out quickly," he said in the post, which was published in July.
It's unclear when the work will start or how long it will take.
The last time Target did major remodeling work at its Lincoln stores was in 2012, when it overhauled the 48th and R store and the one at Edgewood to expand their grocery sections.
