Luke Mullin and Amie Just break down Nebraska men’s basketball’s win over Wisconsin and give their thoughts on what it means for Fred Hoiberg’s future at Nebraska.Â
It was a historic day for Nebraska pitcher Sarah Harness as she notched a no-hitter and came within one out of a perfect game in the 5-0 victory over New Mexico State on Friday at the Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
NU fell to No. 3 Oklahoma State 3-1 earlier in the day.
The Huskers stayed with OSU the whole game with a bend-but-don’t-break mentality, but the Cowgirls broke through in the final inning to secure the win.
After a scoreless first inning, Oklahoma State got on the board in the second with a two-out rally. Chyenne Factor and Morgyn Wynne both singled, and Audre Schneidmiller drove in Factor from second with a single of her own.
OSU had runners in scoring position in both the third and fourth innings, but Nebraska’s defense shut down the scoring chances.
The NU offense struggled all game, managing just one baserunner in the first three innings. But in the fourth, Caitlynn Neal blasted a solo home run to tie it up.
In the sixth, the Cowgirls had a runner on third and later loaded the bases, but again the Huskers got out of the jam with a key tag out at home. Abbie Squier singled to leadoff the bottom of the inning, but NU was unable to get her home.
Oklahoma State finally capitalized in the seventh. A couple of wild pitches allowed runners to get in scoring position, and Katelynn Carwile and Factor hit back-to-back RBI singles to take the lead for good.
NU’s Kaylin Kinney allowed just one run across six innings, while Courtney Wallace allowed two runs in relief. Lexi Kilfoyl was dominant for OSU, allowing just one run and two hits while walking one and striking out five in a full seven innings of work.
Nebraska caught fire late in game two against New Mexico State after a pitching clinic through the first four innings.
Brooke Andrews broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third with a leadoff home run to put the Huskers in front. Katelyn Caneda later singled before the bats stalled.
After another scoreless inning in the fourth, Ava Bredwell singled and stole second to start the top of the fifth. Brooke Andrews followed with a walk, and Caneda hit a three-run homer to stretch the lead, the first home run of her college career.
In the sixth, Bredwell walked and Brooke Andrews got on base for the third time with a single. Squier then hit a single of her own to score Bredwell.
It was an masterpiece from Harness on the mound. She was one out away from a perfect game before an error allowed a runner to reach first. Harness still recorded a no-hitter, racking up 10 strikeouts.
Nebraska takes the field for another doubleheader Saturday against CSU Bakersfield and New Mexico.
