WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Nebraska will play without its leading tackler under the lights against Purdue.
Inside linebacker Luke Reimer was on the field but not in uniform as the Huskers took the field for warmups at Ross-Ade Stadium. His absence means extended action for Eteva Mauga-Clements and Chris Kolarevic alongside the other starter, Nick Henrich.
Reimer had been considered a game-time decision all week since getting banged up against Rutgers. The junior has 49 tackles this season, 15 more than the next closest Husker.
The other key defender with the same game-time status, cornerback Quinton Newsome, is suited and will play against Purdue’s 20th-ranked passing offense.
Meanwhile, senior offensive lineman Broc Bando, who has started the first six games at right guard this season, is not among the 74 observed Huskers who traveled. Bryce Benhart warmed up with the first unit at right guard, with Hunter Anthony getting reps at right tackle and appearing on track to make his first NU start.
Running back Gabe Ervin is also not on the field, likely meaning more chances for Jaquez Yant behind starter Anthony Grant. Rusher/receiver Rahmir Johnson is also suited and active after not traveling to Rutgers last week.
Huskers to travel this week who didn’t at Rutgers also include edge rusher Jake Appleget, offensive lineman Ezra Miller and tight end Luke Lindenmeyer. Receiver Omar Manning also did not travel after suffering an injury in New Jersey.
Punter Brian Buschini, whose foot connected with a helmet on a blocked kick last week and who finished the game with a limp, was the first Husker on the field in full uniform. He appeared healthy as he moved around.
Other pregame observations:
*Â Temperatures for kickoff will be in the upper 40s, with negligible wind and partly overcast skies.
* Purdue previously announced the game as a sellout, though there was plenty of filling in to do 30 minutes before kickoff. The capacity at Ross-Ade Stadium is 57,236. The Boilermakers are wearing gold-and-black tops.
