Are politics moral and a part of human nature? Or do politics now seek to deceive us like the devil deceived Eve to take a bite of the apple?
Studying the development of morality says it came out of early humans realizing they had to work together. Early humans who cooperated empathetically were more likely to succeed. Morality evolved to help people get along and interact with each other.
Voting in America was codified in the Constitution as the method for choosing our laws and leaders. That was thought to be better than using lies and force to rule us.
Susan B. Anthony v. Driehaus was a 2014 Supreme Court case which, in my reading, says lying in politics is just fine. More specifically the case ruled against an Ohio law about lying in politics. In my view, politicians can lie to seize power rather than accept the vote of Americans. Today’s Republicans seeking our high offices demand they can lie, then punish people pointing out the truth. To hell with the golden rule of treating others as you want them to treat you.
