The people who called the city's Animal Control Wednesday thought maybe there was a rattlesnake at the Oak Lake Dog Park.Ìý
But it was a bull snake, which had coiled itself and looked like it might strike. And it was hissing, which can sound a little like a rattler, said Steve Beal, animal control center manager.
Animal control staff member Scott Lowry removed the large snake -- probably 2½ feet long -- from the dog run in northwest Lincoln and released it in a field Wednesday evening.
Lowry identified the snake and was able to use his baton to hold it. He grabbed it behind the head and carried it out for release, Beal said.Ìý
The snake, found just inside the fence for the dog run, probably got spooked by some of the dogs running around, so it coiled up and started hissing and making noise, Lowry said. Â

"They make a hissing noise, which to some people can sound like rattle."
The city doesn't get a lot of snake calls, though bull snakes are fairly common, Beal said.
"It does go to show you we get all kinds of calls," Beal said.
