鈥淎 personal approach to
deal with the stuff!鈥
Legacy Retirement Communities presents educational program for seniors, 鈥淲hat Do I Do with My Stuff?鈥
by Ellie Westfall
for the Neighborhood Extra
Legacy Retirement Communities continues to empower senior adults by offering educational programs for the Lincoln
community looking to be proactive and
prepare for their future.
Stuart Mitchell, a Retirement Living
Advisor for Legacy Retirement Communities, is excited to present 鈥淲hat Do I Do
with My Stuff?鈥
鈥淭his program is designed to address
the overwhelming topic of owning too
much stuff,鈥 says Mitchell. 鈥淣ot knowing what to do with all your stuff can feel
paralyzing.鈥
鈥淎s we age, we don鈥檛 have the energy to
deal with it all, we don鈥檛 know how to get
rid of things we鈥檝e accumulated over the
years, or maybe we don鈥檛 know how to ask
for help,鈥 he says.
Mitchell, who previously managed an
antique store and grew up with collector parents, says he鈥檚 learned a long list of
h
鈥淎 lot of the
information I
present comes
from my
years of helping people
through this
process,鈥 he
explains.
However, Mitchell
Stuart Mitchell
shares that
recently downsizing his mother鈥檚 home helped him gain
new perspective. 鈥淚 now understand how
the heart is attached to things,鈥 he says. 鈥淚t
can be an emotional rollercoaster to see
those things disappear.鈥
鈥淧eople may have a personal attachment to something,鈥 he says, 鈥渙r maybe
they just can鈥檛 bear the thought of someone else owning it when it鈥檚 been in their
home for thirty-plus years.鈥
Whether they are downsizing a
home or dealing with inherited items
from a relative or loved one, Mitchell says
this is a struggle that can affect anyone, at
any age.
Betty T., a former colleague of Mitchell, says he has helped her downsize 鈥渙n
more than one occasion.鈥
鈥淪tuart is very matter of fact,鈥 Betty
says, 鈥淎nd some of what he shares in his
program might be hard to hear.鈥
鈥淚t can be painful,鈥 she shares, 鈥渂ut we
don鈥檛 always realize that we鈥檙e burdened
by our own stuff.鈥
鈥淕etting rid of it can make you feel so
much lighter,鈥 Betty says.
Mitchell is hopeful that this program
will help those who are frustrated with
owning too many things and offer them
some advice on getting rid of any 鈥渏unk鈥
that might be taking up space in their
home.
鈥淚 hope people leave feeling energized
and optimistic about what they can accomplish,鈥 says Mitchell. 鈥淚 also hope they
leave feeling empowered to communicate
with their families and start the conversation.鈥
