Public Media Awards
Nebraska Public Media recently won two Public Media Awards
from the National Educational Telecommunications Association.
The network鈥檚 鈥淲hat If鈥︹ television series was honored for
episodes in the 鈥淭opical Feature鈥 category. 鈥淲hat If鈥︹ explores
innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship, while the crew and
host pull back the curtain on the television production process.
The episode 鈥淒-Wayne, Surgical Robot & Nerd Creativity鈥
features vocal entrepreneur D-Wayne Taylor; a first-of-its-kind
miniature surgical robot that is transforming abdominal surgery;
and 鈥渘erd鈥 creativity displayed at the O-CON pop culture event
in Omaha. Portions of the episode were recorded at Nebraska
Wesleyan University鈥檚 Elder Theatre Center in Lincoln, including
in its extensive costume library.
Another award-winning 鈥淲hat If鈥︹ episode, 鈥淔ast Forward,
Tri Faith, Little Church & MIND Mobile,鈥 includes stories about
a start-up company using thermal imaging to detect power line
problems; a first-of-its-kind interfaithcampus in Omaha; one
tiny historic church serving two faiths; and a youth development
experiment offering haircuts, mentoring and counseling, all on a
bus. Parts of this episode were recorded using a robot server at
JoJo鈥檚 Gelato and Grill in Aurora.
A Nebraska Public Media News radio story about an Indigenous,
intergenerational sewing group that empowers and heals
through fashion was honored in the public media association鈥檚
鈥淩adio Society/Culture鈥漜ategory.
The story explored how generations of Native Americans have
experienced historical trauma due to centuries of mistreatment.
Intertribal women from Nebraska and Iowa who are taking steps
to heal through a new creative outlet were featured, along with
the Healing Ribbons fashion show where women modeled their
self-made garments and accessories.
The National Educational Telecommunications Association
recognized achievements at its 56th Annual Public Media Awards
Gala during the 2024NETA Conference and CPB Public Media
Thought Leader Forum Sept. 15 in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Public
Media Awards, presented by NETA, honor station members鈥
work in the highest caliber of community engagement, content,
education, marketing and communications.
NETA is a professional association representing 303 member
stations in 49 states, the Virgin Islands and the District of
Columbia.
